Save On Other Things

Here is an article that tells you if you look and work hard, you can actually save on anything. Some of these things they recommend will take a lot of time so you might want to see if your time is more valuable than the money you might save.

Cars – You can actually save a lot of money just by comparing quotes from all sources. You can go on the dealer’s websites or go on websites such as Cars.com or Edmunds.com. You might want to go on the Kelley Blue Book website to see what the car you are looking to purchase will hold up and how much it will cost you to own in five years.

Gas- Everyone is trying to save on gas nowadays. The best way to save on gas is to drive slower.

Groceries- Many supermarkets provide coupons in the mail. You should also review websites such as Coupons.com to obtain more coupons online.

Travel- By researching websites such as Kayak.com or Expedia.com, you can save a lot of money. It might not hurt to call the hotels you will be staying to see if they have a special that is not advertised.

7 Money Rules that is Changing

We have all heard about these seven money rules. Attached is an article that tells you why the seven rules are no longer valid or at least should be modified to the current ages. I have listed some of the rules and my comments about them.

Subtract your age from 100

As we retire younger and live longer, this rule will have to be adjusted. Back in the 70s or 80s, your parents might have received pension plans which reduce what they need to save. Nowadays, we have to rely on ourselves to save money. This is a big difference. Also, we can expect that social security might run out by the time we retire. This rule will most likely need to be adjusted to the current times.

Set aside 10% of gross income for saving

Nowadays, I don’t really think saving just 10% for retirement is enough. I know it might be hard to save a lot more when you are just starting out on your career, but any money you save early on will add up faster.

The Stock Market will give you 10% annual return

I don’t believe the market will be able to keep up with 10% annually. With current stock market conditions, 8% is what the experts think it should be. I personally calculate at 6% so I will save more and assume less.

Refinance your home when interest rates drop by 2 percentage points

I think if you have a 1 percent drop, you could be saving a lot of money. First, of course, you should calculate all the extra fees such as closing costs and refinancing costs to make sure you’re saving money.

Warren Buffett's Advice to Young People

Sorry about the lack of posts. I have been busy with work since it is the end of the month and I need to get all the reports done before the Fourth of July Holiday. I should have some extra time over the weekend.

Here is some good advice from Warren Buffett. This advice is directed at the younger generation but you can really say that this advice can work for everyone out there.

The biggest suggestion I have is to avoid credit cards. Interest rates are very high on credit cards. Sometimes they are 18 percent. Sometimes they are 20 percent. If I borrowed money at 18 or 20 percent, I’d be broke.... So if I had one piece of advice for young people generally it would be to just avoid credit cards.

Avoiding credit card debt especially if they are over 10 percent is a smart move. The stock market, on average, only returns about 10% a year. If you have a credit card debt with 18% interest, it will be very hard for you to pay it back.

Most important advice is to stay out of debt. Any kind of debt just prevents you from saving.
